As much as we like to focus on the biggest and the best, however, roughly 70% of Minnesota’s lakes are actually considered natural environment lakes, a shoreland classification that is generally applied to shallow lakes with limited capacity to absorb the impacts of development and recreational use.

Many of our frustrations with shallow lakes in our communities would be eliminated if we learned to love them for what they are â€“ excellent wildlife habitat, essential links in the watershed chain, which help to absorb pollutants and excess nutrients as well as limit flooding, and beautiful scenery in our backyards and along our trail corridors.
